INSTITUTIONAL PROFILE - HACETTEPE UNIVERSITY,
Hacettepe University is one of the leading universities in Turkey and is located in Ankara, the Capital. It is a comprehensive public university known for high quality and standards in education, training, research, knowledge and technology transfer. There is a significant and growing demand from the national and international students for the education and training programs provided by the university both at the undergraduate and graduate levels. When the infrastructure of campuses and the continuous support and opportunities provided for the students are considered, the university can easily be called a ‘student-friendly’ university.
The mission and vision of Hacettepe University address universal values, international and contemporary educational standards crucial to succeed in a competitive world. Due to our unending efforts to reach higher levels of expertise in science, research and art our students will be ready to start a very successful career and would realize their future career when they graduate from Hacettepe University.
Hacettepe University was founded in 1954 by Prof. Dr. İhsan Doğramacı as Department of Children Health, which became Institute and Hospital of Children Health in 1957 and started to serve for education, research and public service in 1958. With the addition of new graduate schools, vocational schools, faculties, science and research centers over the years, it turned into a modern and comprehensive university named Hacettepe University in 1967. Hacettepe has become a leading university and an educational hub in time, combining 16 faculties, 14 graduate schools, 2 applied schools, 1 conservatory, 6 vocational schools, and 99 research and application centers.
Today the number of students reached up to 44,000, and the number of academic staff reached up to nearly 3,500. Through the bilateral and multipartner agreements with national universities (90 Farabi Exchange Program Agreements) and the well-known universities, organizations, foundations of the world (500 Erasmus Agreements, >200 Memorandum of Understandings, 32 Mevlana Exchange Program Agreements), Hacettepe University has an international and interdisciplinary philosophy of education. The University is an active member of various international associations and organizations such as European University Association (EUA), International Association of Universities (IAU), European University Association-Council for Doctoral Education (EUA-CDE), Agence Universite de la Francophonie (AUF), EuroMediteranian University (EMUNI) and World Forum of University of Sustainability of Resourses (WFURS).To bridge the high quality education with practice and keep upto- date, the students and faculty members are encouraged and supported for their national and international scientific and research activities and their participation in various national and international workshops, congresses, internship programs, projects are funded. Our motto is ‘academic excellence’ and all our efforts are for our students to carry them to a better future.
International students prefer Hacettepe University as an international university for undergraduate and postgraduate education and training. Our international student community is over 1800 and is composed of students from 83 different countries which makes the university an international university. The specific orientation programme dedicated for our international students and the International Students Day are some of the activities related to our international students.
Hacettepe University is a comprehensive university and has two main campuses (Sihhiye and Beytepe) while Besevler Campus hosts the Conservatory, which is not very common for the universities in Turkey. Sıhhiye Campus, can easily be called as ‘the biomedical campus’ since 2 faculties of Medicine (in one of these faculties the medium of instruction is in English and in the other one it is Turkish), Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Nursing, Faculty of Pharmacy and Faculty of Health Sciences; graduate schools of Cancer, Child Health, Public Health, Neurological Sciences and Psychiatry, Population Studies and Health Sciences; and Vocational School of Health Services are located in this campus. In addition, the Adult Hospital, İhsan Doğramacı Children’s Hospital, Oncology Hospital and Dental Hospital are located in Sıhhiye Campus. All these faculties and hospitals constitute one of the largest hospital complexes in the country with almost one million patient admissions every year. The hospitals, clinics and laboratories have high-tech equipment and all the modern and contemporary diagnosis and care is provided. The hospitals are JCI accredited.
The second campus is in Beytepe, which is approximately 20 km from city centre. Built in 1975, Beytepe Campus accommodates the Faculties of Letters, Education, Science, Fine Arts, Law, Economics & Administrative Sciences, Communication, Engineering, Sport Sciences; School of Foreign Languages; The Ataturk Institute for Modern Turkish History; graduate schools of Informatics, Science, Educational Sciences, Social Sciences, Nuclear Sciences, and Turkish Studies Institute. Besides, Hacettepe University TÖMER (Turkish as a Foreign Language Teaching, Research and Implementation Center), Student’s Health Center, Convention Center, Olympic Swimming Pool and Hacettepe Technopolis and Technology Transfer Center, Project Support Center are also within the borders of this campus. In School of Foreign Languages many languages are taught (E.g. English, German, French, Japanese, Arabic, Spanish, Italian, Persian, Arabic, Latin, Chinese)
Hacettepe University provides all the students with the opportunity to choose elective courses from many departments in all disciplines in undergraduate and graduate degree programs (121 undergraduate and 374 graduate programs) and programs provided in English, German and French are also available. A variety of these programs are nationally or internationally accredited (E.g. MÜDEK, ABET, WFOT). The Hacettepe University Turkey Doping Control Center is accredited by WADA, while the hospitals are accredited by JCI.
All the campuses have the necessary infrastructure regarding education, research, sport transportation, arts, culture, health and accommodation facilities. The libraries in the campuses have the capacity to meet all information needs of its users and highperformance workstations in the departments also present an opportunity for those who desire to perform comprehensive digital practices. In the national university entrance examinations which takes place every year, a considerable number of top students prefer faculties and departments of Hacettepe University. Hacettepe University has a significant budget for scientific activities and research. Thus, has an outstanding reputation in research and international publications which clearly make the University a destination not only for the country and for the region, but internationally.
